Brighton 0-4 Man Utd
First half Despite Brighton enjoying much greater possession than in the first match, Manchester United cruise to a 3-0 lead.
Second half Amazingly, Brighton's players and fans keep going to the last. An emotional finish.
Brighton 2-2 Man Utd
First half A great opening 45 minutes in the most famous day in the history of Brighton & Hove Albion. And Smith does score!
Second half After Manchester United's comeback, Gary Stevens crowns his man-of-the-match performance with a last-gasp equaliser to take the match into extra-time.
Extra-time Players from both sides start to get tired. However, Michael Robinson sets up Gordon Smith, who has a great chance to win the FA Cup for Brighton. Sadly, it doesn't happen!

Melia & Atkinson - Interview
David Coleman interviews the two bosses on Cup Final day.
Brighton 0-1 Man City
Brighton lose at home in the penultimate league match of the season and are relegated. Manchester City, despite this win, also go down, with David Pleat's Luton Town (with Brian Horton in midfield) surviving after a famous finish at Maine Road.
Brighton 2-1 Sheff Weds
A glorious day at Highbury as Brighton defeat Second Division Sheffield Wednesday to make it to their first ever FA Cup Final. For extended highlights, you can watch ITV's coverage with commentary by Brian Moore
Brighton 1-2 Everton
Some terrible lapses in defence gifts Everton two goals and the match as Albion curiously play Steve Foster up front!
Brighton 2-1 Tottenham
Two sendings off and two late goals make for a stormy second half in this rather peculiar victory. Brighton's win follows creditable draws in Division One against Manchester United, Liverpool and Aston Villa. However, the Seagulls are still bottom of the table. For extended highlights, you can watch The Big Match Revisited
Brighton 1-0 Norwich
Jimmy Case's controversially charges through the Norwich defence in the 66th minute to win this untidy game. It is Brighton's first ever appearance in the Quarter Finals of the FA Cup.
Liverpool 1-2 Brighton
A famous shock as Jimmy Case and Jimmy Melia comes back to their old club to hand them their first home Cup defeat since 1974. Case's blockbuster came a minute after Craig Johnston's equaliser. 46 minutes of footage with commentary provided by Tony Millard and Stephen Rooke of Radio Brighton.
Short highlights featuring the goals and penalty.
Brighton 4-0 Man City
A comprehensive thrashing of Manchester City, with goals from Case, Smillie and two from Maine Road old boy Michael Robinson.
Newcastle 0-1 Brighton
Brighton survive two late disallowed goals to overcome sustained pressure from Newcastle. Thank you, referee Trelford Mills!
Enjoy again Peter Ward's smart, clinical finish. Could have done with that in the dying seconds of the Final!Brighton 1-1 Watford
Peter Ward equalises in the 85th minute after Michael Robinson has two shots blocked following Grealish's cross. Brighton, with only one win in nine games, desperately wanted a win against high-flying Watford. However, Kenny Jackett had blasted the ball into the roof of the net for the visitors on 79 minutes, before the Seagulls scrambled in this equaliser.
Brighton 3-0 Norwich
A heartwarming victory in front of Match of the Day's cameras. Jimmy Case and Andy Ritchie's goals here give Albion a 2-0 lead before Robinson wraps things up. This stems a run of four consecutive defeats, including the Watford match.
Watford 4-1 Brighton
The First Division new boys Watford outclass Brighton, with John Barnes and Nigel Callaghan having particularly good games. This heavy away defeat follows similar reverses at West Brom (0-5), Nottingham Forest (0-4), Luton (0-5) and Stoke (0-3) in the opening three months of the season.
Brighton 1-0 Man Utd
On-loan Peter Ward, and boyhood United fan, scores his favourite goal of his career. This is Brighton's first ever top-flight win over Manchester United.
Stoke 3-0 Brighton
A Mark Chamberlain goal contributes to another away day thrashing for the Albion.
Brighton 1-1 Ipswich
Eric Gates gets a goal for Ipswich. Sadly, Andy Ritchie’s goal for the Albion has not yet been located.

Profiles

Mike Bailey
Manager. A former Charlton and Wolves player who took over from Alan Mullery at the Goldstone Ground in the summer of 1981. An England international in his day, he began his management career as player-manager with Hereford, enjoying a spell as player-coach with Minnesota Kicks in the N.A.S.L. and managed Charlton Athletic for a year before moving south. After guiding Brighton to a shock League win at Anfield in March 1982, a poor run of twenty defeats in 31 League matches, and unrest at his ultra-defensive tactics, led to Bailey leaving in December 1982 by 'mutual consent'.

Jimmy Melia
Manager. A former inside-forward who spent most of his career at Liverpool before spells at Wolves and Southampton. He was player-coach at Aldershot and Crewe before coaching in the USA and the Middle East. Became Albion chief scout in April 1980 and took a leading role after being appointed joint interim manager with George Aitken in December 1982. Brought back a more attacking playing style, although he was unable to halt Albion's slide towards relegation. His bubbly personality and white disco shoes made him a media darling during the club's famous FA Cup run. Resigned in October 1983.

Graham Moseley
Goalkeeper. Born Stretford, Lancashire. Age 28 (until 16 Nov '82). A former England Youth international who started his career on the books at Blackburn, but made his League debut for Derby against Tottenham in April 1973. He subsequently had spells on loan to Aston Villa and Walsall before joining Brighton for a £20,000 fee in November 1977. Lost his place to Perry Digweed in January 1981, but became first choice under new manager Mike Bailey the following season. Played 27 League games in 1982/83 and made a series of fine saves in the FA Cup Semi-Final at Highbury. Joined Cardiff on a free transfer in August 1986.

Perry Digweed
Goalkeeper. Born Chelsea, London. Age 22 (until 26 Oct '82). Started his career with Fulham, making his League debut against Bolton in January 1977 while still an apprentice. He was unable to really establish himself in the first team at Craven Cottage and so jumped at the chance of First Division football when he moved to Brighton in January 1981. Was second choice for the 1982/83 season, playing fifteen League games, although he featured in the famous FA Cup shock against Liverpool. Joined Wimbledon on a free transfer after being released in May 1993.

Gary Stevens
Defender. Born Hillingdon, Middlesex. Age 21 (until 30 Mar '83). Gary was surprisingly the only member of the current first team squad at Brighton to have graduated from the apprentice ranks. He originally signed on as an associate schoolboy with Ipswich Town, but served most of his apprenticeship with Albion, making his League debut against his former club in September 1979, one month before signing full professional forms. Voted Rediffusion's Albion Player of the Year for 1983 and earned the BBC's Man of the Match award for his assured performances in the FA Cup Final matches. Left for Spurs in the summer in a £300,000 deal.

Chris Ramsey
Defender. Born Birmingham, Warwickshire. Age 20 (until 28 Apr '83). Right-back who started his career with Bristol City but was released in 1980. Saved from the soccer scrapheap by Alan Mullery, making his League debut in a win at Crystal Palace in April 1981. After 19 months where he was completely out of favour during Mike Bailey's reign, became a first team regular under Jimmy Melia from December 1982. Was sent off three times in two weeks, missing the FA Cup Semi-Final through suspension. Was withdrawn from the Final after a reckless tackle by Norman Whiteside and missed the replay. Joined Swindon on loan in August 1984 and the deal became permanent in December that year.

Don Shanks
Defender. Born Hammersmith, London. Age 29 (until 2 Oct '82). A former England Youth international who started his career with Fulham, but made his League debut for Luton Town against Preston North End in August 1971. He transferred to Queen's Park Rangers for £40,000 in November 1974. Moved on to Brighton in a free transfer in August 1981. After being first choice under Mike Bailey, he lost his place to Chris Ramsey under Jimmy Melia and George Aitken in December 1982, having played ten League games during the season. Shortly after, he joined Hong Kong side Eastern. Known for dating the 1977 Miss World, Mary Stavin.

Sammy Nelson
Defender. Born Belfast, Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland. Age 33 (until 1 Apr '83). A former Under-23 international for Northern Ireland who joined his first club, Arsenal, in April 1966. He made his League debut in October 1969, and went on to make 255 League appearances for the Gunners before transferring to Brighton for £35,000 in September 1981. An experienced international, and a member of Northern Ireland's 1982 World Cup squad, he was first-choice left-back after ousting Gary Williams from the number three shirt but lost his place to Graham Pearce in January 1983, having made thirteen League appearances during the campaign. He then coached the reserves before his player registration was cancelled in April 1984.

Steve Gatting
Defender. Born Park Royal, Willesden, Middlesex. Age 23 (until 29 May '83). Steve, who is the brother of England cricketer Mike Gatting, started his football career with Arsenal, where he made his League debut against Southampton in October 1978. A utility player who can play either defence or midfield, he made 58 League appearances for the Gunners before his £200,000 move to Brighton in September 1981, where he almost solely played in defence. An automatic choice in the Brighton first team, he played much of the second half of the season as left-back before forming a superb centre-back partnership with Gary Stevens in the 1983 FA Cup Final. Gatting then played right-back in the replay. Joined Charlton on a free transfer in August 1991.

Steve Foster
Defender. Born Portsmouth, Hampshire. Age 24 (until 24 Sep '82). Started his career with Portsmouth, where he made his League debut against Orient in August 1975. Played for four seasons with Portsmouth during which time they slid from the Second to the Fourth Division, but he impressed the Albion management, who signed him for £150,000 in July 1979. A dominant, inspiring figure in defence, he was made club captain in 1981. An England international who played in the 1982 World Cup finals. Missed the first FA Cup Final game through suspension but was back for the replay. Joined Aston Villa in March 1984.

Graham Pearce
Defender. Born Hammersmith, London. Age 23 (until 8 Jul '83). A competitive left-back who joined Barnet after four years at Hillingdon Borough. He was transfer-listed at Barnet at his own request when he played against Brighton twice in the FA Cup in January 1982. Joined the Seagulls shortly after for a fee that reached £20,000. Made his League debut on the opening day of the 1982/83 season, making thirteen appearances in the Division One campaign and playing in the FA Cup Final in his first season as a professional. Joined Brentford after being released at the end of the 1985/86 season.

Kieran O’Regan
Defender. Born Cork, Co. Cork, Republic of Ireland. Age 18 (until 9 Nov '82). Eire Youth international defender who was spotted by former Albion assistant coach Brian Eastick while playing for the Irish League side Tramore Athletic. Was impressive during a trial with the Seagulls and joined Brighton in a £10,000 deal in April 1983. Was named as substitute for the FA Cup Semi-Final but was not used. Made his League debut for Brighton in the club's last appearance in the top flight, at Norwich in May 1983. Signed for Swindon after the 1986/87 season.

Neil McNab
Midfield. Born Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland. Age 25 (until 4 Jun '83). Started his career with his local club, Morton, where he made fourteen League appearances in the Scottish League before transferring to Tottenham while still only sixteen years old. A former Scottish Under-21 international, he made his English League debut against Newcastle in December 1974. He transferred to Bolton in November 1978, and moved on to Brighton in a £200,000 transfer in February 1980. A regular in the side under Mullery and Bailey, he turned down a loan spell to Newcastle in September 1982, fell out with the club, and was dropped when Melia took over. He made thirteen League appearances for the Seagulls as well as joining Leeds and Portsmouth on loan during the season. Sold to Manchester City for £30,000 in July 1983.

Jimmy Case
Midfield. Born Liverpool, Lancashire. Age 28 (until 18 May '83). Started his career with Liverpool, where he made his League debut against Queen's Park Rangers in April 1975, two years after turning professional. A very popular player with the Kop, he made 186 League appearances for the Reds before moving to Brighton in August 1981 in a £400,000 deal which involved a swap with Mark Lawrenson. After a moderate 1981/82 season, he truly established himself under Melia who used him in centre of midfield. Renowned for an extremely powerful shot, Case hit vital goals against Manchester City, Liverpool, Norwich and Sheffield Wednesday in Brighton's 1983 FA Cup run. Sold to Southampton for just £30,000 in March 1985.

Giles Stille
Midfield. Born Fulham, London. Age 23 (until 10 Nov '82). Made his League debut for Brighton as a substitute against Manchester City in December 1979, but it was not until the latter weeks of the 1980/81 season that he started to establish himself in the Brighton first team on a regular basis. Struck three goals in ten League appearances but was overlooked for much of the following season. Was also a fringe player in 1982/83, notching up nine League appearances including two as substitute. Was diagnosed with diabetes in 1982. A back injury forced him to retire from professional football in December 1984.

Tony Grealish
Midfield. Born Paddington, London. Age 25 (until 21 Sep '82). A tenacious ball-winner and Republic of Ireland international. He started his career with Orient, where he made his League debut against Sheffield Wednesday in September 1974. Made 171 League appearance for Orient before transferring to Luton in August 1979. Brighton laid out over £100,000 for him in July 1981, and his tenacious performances eventually won over the Albion fans in 1982/83. Following Steve Foster's suspension from the first match, he captained Brighton in the 1983 FA Cup Final. Signed by West Brom in March 1984 in a £95,000 deal.

Gary Howlett
Midfield. Born Dublin, Co. Dublin, Republic of Ireland. Age 19 (until 2 Apr '83). A former Republic of Ireland Youth international, he joined Coventry from Home Farm but was released in May 1982. A successful trialist at Brighton, he scored on his League debut against Liverpool in March 1983. Howlett notched up nine appearances in Division One during the 1982/83 campaign. Made his FA Cup debut in the Semi-Final against Sheffield Wednesday and crossed the ball for Gordon Smith to head home in the Final against Manchester United. Sold to Bournemouth for £15,000 in December 1984.

Michael Robinson
Forward. Born Leicester, Leicestershire. Age 24 (until 12 Jul '83). A big, bustling centre-forward who scored 37 goals for Brighton in the top flight - more than any other player during the club's four year spell in Division One. Started his career with Preston, where he made his debut against Swindon in September 1977. In July 1979, he hit the headlines when Malcolm Allison paid out £750,000 to take him to Maine Road, but he made only 30 League appearances for Manchester City before moving to Brighton in a £400,000 deal a year later. His three goals in the FA Cup in 1982/83 included a brace against his former club and the Semi-Final winner against Sheffield Wednesday. Set up Gordon Smith's saved effort in the dying seconds in the first Wembley clash. Was transferred to Liverpool for £200,000 in August 1983.

Andy Ritchie
Forward. Born Manchester, Lancashire. Age 21 (until 28 Nov '82). Andy started his career with Manchester United, where he made his League debut against Everton in December 1977. An England Under-21 player, he made 33 appearances for United before moving to Brighton in a complicated deal which took Peter Ward from Brighton to Nottingham Forest, and Gary Birtles from Forest to United. Valued at about £500,000. After scoring twelve League goals the previous season, he struggled to find the net in the 1982/83 campaign, hitting just five goals in 24 League appearances before leaving for Leeds United in March 1983 in an exchange deal with Terry Connor.

Gordon Smith
Midfield/forward. Born Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Scotland. Age 27 (until 29 Dec '82). A former Scottish Under-21 player blessed with silky skills. Started his career with Kilmarnock, but made his name with Glasgow Rangers. Played a total of 261 League games in Scotland, winning both League and Cup winners' medals while at Ibrox, and signed for Brighton in June 1980 for £350,000, which was Brighton's record fee at the time. Was an irregular choice under Mike Bailey, and returned on loan to Rangers in December 1982, playing in the Scottish League Cup Final against Celtic. Back in favour under Jimmy Melia, he set up Robinson's winner in the FA Cup Semi-Final and then opened the scoring against Manchester United in the Final before his late chance to grab the winner. Sold to Manchester City for £35,000 in March 1984.

Gerry Ryan
Forward. Born Dublin, Co. Dublin, Republc of Ireland. Age 26 (until 4 Oct '82). Republic of Ireland international who originally played for the Dublin club Bohemians before signing for Derby for £50,000. Moved to Brighton a year later for £80,000 in October 1978 and featured prominently as Brighton reached Division One. Versatile attacking player who was unable to command a regular first team place since Albion's debut season in First Division. In 1982/83, he made sixteen League starts and came off the bench ten times. Scored the opening goal in the shock 2-1 FA Cup win at Liverpool and came on as a substitute for Chris Ramsey in the 1983 FA Cup Final. Retired from the game after a broken leg in April 1985.

Peter Ward
Forward. Born Lichfield, Staffordshire. Age 27 (until 27 Jul '83). Age 28. Fans' favourite who scored 79 goals in 178 League appearances during his prolific first stay at Brighton. Signed for Nottingham Forest in a £450,000 but found life hard at the City Ground. Had a successful loan spell with Seattle Sounders starting in March 1982. Returned to Brighton on loan from Nottingham Forest in October 1982, getting important goals against Manchester United, Watford and Newcastle. After his loan spell ended, signed for Vancouver Whitecaps in November 1983.

Neil Smillie
Winger. Born Barnsley, Yorkshire. Age 24 (until 19 Jul '83). Known as 'Specky,' he enjoys playing on the right and taking left-backs on. Started his career with Crystal Palace, where he made his League debut against Oxford United in October 1976. Also spent a short period on loan to Brentford during the 1976/77 season. Played 83 League games for Palace before moving to Brighton in July 1982 in an exchange deal involving Albion's long-serving full-back Gary Williams. Became a regular first team choice in the second half of the 1982/83 season, getting his first goal in the emphatic FA Cup win against Manchester City. Sold to Watford for £100,000 in June 1985.

Terry Connor
Forward. Born Leeds, Yorkshire. Age 19 (until 9 Nov '82). Scored on his First Division debut for Leeds in 1979. Big, strong centre-forward involved in accusations of 'diving' to win a penalty against Brighton in March 1980. Went on to hit nineteen goals in 96 games for the Elland Road side before Brighton acquired his services in a straight swop with Andy Ritchie in March 1983. Was cup-tied so played no part in Brighton's FA Cup run and struggled for form in the League. However, he did score the only goal against Coventry in April 1983, Brighton's last ever win in the top flight. Transferred to Portsmouth for £200,000 in July 1987.

Michael Ring
Forward. Born Brighton, Sussex. Age 21 (until 13 Feb '83). Youngster who started out with Brighton Boys before he was recommended to Brighton by former goalkeeper Peter Grummitt. Joined the Albion as an apprentice before turning professional in 1978. To follow his two appearances for Brighton the previous season, Michael only played once for the Seagulls in 1982/83, coming on as a substitute in the 5-0 thrashing by Luton Town in September 1982. Signed by Hull City on a free transfer in the summer of 1984.

Chris Rodon
Forward. Born Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales. Age 19 (until 9 Jun '83). Scored 99 goals in three seasons for Pontardawe Athletic in the Welsh League. After an unsuccessful trial with Liverpool, arrived in Brighton in January 1983 and made a good enough impression to join the Albion from Pontardawe in a £2,000 deal. As a substitute, played in the last fifteen minutes of Brighton's last ever game in Division One, a 2-1 defeat at Norwich in May 1983. After feeling homesick, joined Cardiff City on loan in August 1983, playing six matches. Had his contract suspended by Brighton the following month.
N.B. All ages correct as of 1 August 1982.
